Here are 8 warning signs of diabetes to look out for!
Frequent Urination
The more glucose your body produces, the more likely you are to spend time urinating. So if you find yourself spending far too much time in the bathroom, it might just be a cause for concern.
Dry Mouth
If you have diabetes, you are most likely to feel thirsty all the time and have an excessively dry mouth. This is because your body is constantly making you urinate. As you lose fluids from the body, you will ultimately begin to feel dehydrated, and your mouth will feel dry.
Itchiness
Skin itchiness is another symptom of diabetes and is caused by the dehydration that also causes your mouth and throat to be dry. As you lose fluids, your mouth and throat dry up due to dehydration, as does your skin.
Appetite Gain
Another diabetes warning sign is appetite gain. Those who have diabetes often feel hungry even after they eat. This is because when you have diabetes, your body does not respond to insulin. As such, the glucose you obtain from food does not convert to energy and reach the cells, and your brain does not get the signal that you’re full.
Tiredness or Lethargy
When the cells of your body do not get enough glucose (as in both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes), it is common to feel tired or lethargic most of the day. It doesn’t matter how much rest you get. Even with enough rest, diabetes is likely to make you feel weak.
Excessive Weight Gain or Loss
Often, those who have Type 1 diabetes (where the body doesn’t produce insulin), experience rapid and excessive bouts of weight gain or loss. This is because, when you have diabetes, your body can’t get the energy it requires from the food that you eat. When this happens, your body will instead start to burn your fat and muscle to gain energy.
As such, you will most likely lose weight rapidly, even if you haven’t at all changed the amount of food that you consume.
When diabetes goes untreated, it leads to rapid and excessive weight loss. If, however, you begin treatment for diabetes and begin to take insulin shots, the insulin will allow your body to absorb more glucose, and this can sometimes even lead to weight gain.
Pain or Numbness in Feet
Diabetes can make your blood sugar levels skyrocket. When your blood sugar remains high for too long at a stretch, it can cause damage to the nerves in your legs and feet. As such, you might experience pain or a numbing sensation in your feet if you have diabetes.
Blurry Vision
If you’ve been noticing lately that your vision is blurred, you may not necessarily have to get an eye test done or a new pair of glasses. Often, when your sugar levels rise, your eyes swell up, and this may affect your vision, preventing you from seeing clearly.
The sooner you get checked for diabetes, the sooner your treatment can begin. So if you are exhibiting any of these diabetes warning signs, you should visit a doctor at your earliest!
